Wait Until Dark #1
10/2/09
This here blog is a chronicle of my journey as I plunge into the darkness of portraying Susy Hendrix in the thriller play Wait Until Dark at Newport Theatre Arts Center.
Over a year ago, when I was deciding if I was going to move back home to California from NYC, I asked myself, “What do I want to do in Cali that I’m not doing here?” My first thoughts were, “I want to do more legit shows since I could potentially be a bigger fish in a smaller pond out there. Oh, and I want to be near the beach”. Well low and behold I got it! I just closed I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at Huntington Beach Playhouse where I could smell the ocean from the parking lot, AND I was just cast in Wait Until Dark in Newport Beach! Newport Theatre Arts Center is on Cliff Drive, overlooking Newport Bay. Our first read thru was last Monday evening and I just couldn’t stop myself from calling my friend Jessica in New York and leaving her a message saying, “Well here I am, going into rehearsals for another show and I’m sitting in my car watching the sun set over the beach! I got exactly what I asked for!”
I’m portraying the role of Susy Hendrix in Frederick Knott’s
1966 play Wait Until Dark.
Susy is a blind Greenwich
Village housewife who becomes the target of three thugs searching
for the heroin
hidden in a doll, which her husband transported from Canada as a
favor to a woman who since has been murdered. The
trio tries to convince Susy her spouse has been implicated in the crime and the
only way to protect him is to surrender the doll. More murder and mayhem ensue
when she refuses, with the stage lights turned off for the final scene when
Suzy levels the playing field by plunging her apartment into total darkness.
It’s the biggest,
most daring role I’ve ever been entrusted with. I’m thrilled, absolutely up for
the challenge and will be documenting my entire journey while I dive into the
world of darkness under the spotlight.
